the park model, GIS and Crisis mapping Flashcards
What is the park model and what does it show
Also known as the disaster response curve
Understand the time, dimensions of resilience from the time of hazard to when the country returns to normal
What does the park model take into account
- Hazards are inconsistent
- All hazards have different impacts and responses
- Wealthier countries have different curves as they can recover faster
- in hazard events that effect multiple countries. each country has its own curve
what is the difference between the curves of AC country’s and LIDC countries
AC - shallow curve because they can recover quicker and return to normal before lidcs but also they can go into the improvement stage
LIDCs - steep curve that slightly rises many LIDCs don’t return back to normal but stay in the deterioration zone for years
What are the different zones in the park model
- improvement
- normality
- deterioration
What is a GIS map
Geographic information system - a software that blends the power of a map and the data base to create, manage and analyse info. Mainly about a location
reveals information about health, education, manufacturing and insurance
What are the positives and negatives of GIS
positives
- shows areas effected
- can show potential evacuation routes
- shows high areas of population density
- Wealth in an area
negatives
- Can be outdated as it uses data that has already been gathered
What is crisis mapping (disaster mapping)
The real time gathering, display and analysis of data during a crisis
what are the strengths and weaknesses of crisis mapping
strengths - real time information
- crowdsourcing
- better coordination
- improved access to effected areas
weaknesses - dependence on technology
- Data overload
- limited coverage
