Q

Explain redshift

A

Different chemicals absorb different frequencies of light
Each element produces a specific pattern of dark lines at the frequencies that it absorbs in the visible spectrum
When we look at light from distant galaxies we can see the same patterns but at slightly lower frequencies than they should be - they’re shifter towards the end of the red end of the spectrum.

Q

Explain the Doppler effect

A

The sound waves from a car are equally spaced but for a moving car, the wavelengths seem longer on the side they face an individual that the side facing away from the individual
The frequency of the sound waves seems to be lower if the car is moving away from you
