Energy sources and the environment Flashcards
In what order do oil, coal and gas release the most/lest co2
Coal
Oil
Gas
What can coal mining do to the environment
Damage the landscape
What can oil spillages do to the environment
Affect mammals and birds that live in and around the sea
What is bad about nuclear waste
Dangerous
Difficult to dispose of
What is good about nuclear fuel but bad about nuclear as a whole
Relatively cheap but overall cost is high due to power plant cost and decommissioning
What is the main risk of nuclear power/ example?
Major catastrophe like Chernobyl
What is the main disadvantage of biofuels
Deforestation causes loss of animal habitat
What is Carbon capture and storage used for(2)
Reduce the amount of Co2 building up in the atmosphere
Reduce the strength of the greenhouse effect
How does Carbon capture and storage work
Collects Co2 from the power stations before it is released into the atmosphere
The captured Co2 is then pumped into empty gas and oil fields where it can be safely stored without adding to the greenhouse effect
What - apart from CCS - other ways are being explored to store Co2
Dissolving in seawater at the bottom of the ocean
Capturing with Algae
What is an advantage of capturing the Co2 with algae
Can be made into biofuels
