Energy sources and Power stations Flashcards
What are the 4 types of Non-renewable energy sources
Coal
Oil
Natural gas
Nuclear
What are the 3 facts of non-renewable energy sources
- They WILL run out one day
- They DO damage the environment
- They provide the MOST energy
What are the 8 renewable energy sources
Wind Waves Tidal Solar Geothermal Food Biofuels Hydroelectric
What ae the 4 facts of renewable energy sources
- They will NEVER run out
- They DO damage the environment but SIGNIFICANTLY LESS
- They DONT provide much energy
- SOME are UNRELIABLE
What is the order of energy transfers in a typical power statin
Chemical - Heat - Kinetic - Electrical
What is the order of stations in a typical power station
Fuel - Boiler - Turbine - Generator -National Grid
Explain how fuels are turned to electrical energy in a typical power station
- The fossil fuel is burned to convert its stored chemical energy into thermal energy
- The heat energy is used to heat the water to produce steam which turns the turbine
- The turbine converts heat into kinetic energy
- The turbine is connected to a generator which transfers kinetic energy into electrical energy
What is different about a nuclear power station
It uses nuclear fission of uranium or plutonium to produce heat to make steam to drive turbines
What power station takes the longest time to start up
Nuclear
What power station takes the shortest time to start up (of the fossil fuel power stations)
Natural gas power station
