The Opaque Eye Flashcards
What are the main causes of corneal ulcerative disease?
- Melting ulcer
- Descemetocele
- KCS
- Spontaneous Chronic Corneal Epithelial Defects (SCCEDs)
- Feline Corneal Sequestum
- Feline Herpesvirus
- Feline Acute Bullous Keratopathy
- Facial nerve paralysis
What are the causes of a melting ulcer?
Collagenolysis via serin and matrix-metalo proteases (MMPs)
What is a descemetocele?
A deep ulcer that reaches the Descemet’s membrane
How would you treat a descemetocele?
You should refer!
How would you diagnose a decemetocele?
The ulcer does not take up fluorescein but the surrounding oedematous stroma does so will appear to have a clear centre
What are the two typical groups for KCS?
a. 0-2y/6-8y males: ulcerative
b. 5y females: non-ulcerative
What are the clinical signs of KCS?
Mucoid discharge
Hyphema
What is the treatment for KCS?
Cyclosporin, viscous tears +/- chloramphenicol drops
What is the cause of SCCEDs?
Loos epithelial edges which folds onto itself
What are the clinical signs of SCCEDs?
Corneal oedema
Ocular pain
Vascularisation
What is the treatment for SCCEDs?
Debride + grid keratectomy + chloramphenicol
Tarsorrhaphy
How does feline corneal sequestrum occur?
Spontaneously after a bump or rub
What are the clinical signs of sequestrum?
Tan/brown/black discolouration of the superficial stroma usually central.
What is the treatment for feline sequestrum?
Superficial keratectomy + viscous tears
How does facial nerve paralysis cause ulceration?
Loss of blink
