Colours Of The Cornea Flashcards
What four main colour changes can affect the cornea?
- Red/Pink
- White
- Blue
- Brown/Black
What are the potential causes of a red cornea?
Irritation
LPI
Feline eosinophillic keratitis
KCS
Give examples of corneal irritation.
Entropion
Ectropion
Triachiasis
Distichasis
What is LPI?
Canine Lymphocytic Plasmacytic Infiltration. Lymphocytes infiltrate the cornea alongside blood vessels beginning from the lateral/medial limbus.
How would you diagnose LPI?
Cytobrush after administration of proxymetacaine
What is the treatment for LPI?
Steroid or cyclosporin drops 6x daily
What is feline eosinophilic keratitis?
A disease with cluster of eosinophils appearing as pink/white clump infiltrates. It is also seen in horses and rabbits
How do you treat eosinophilic keratitis?
Steroid drops six times a day
What is KCS?
Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca AKA dry eye. Usually bilateral.
How would you diagnose KCS?
STT1
What is the treatment of KCS?
Cyclosporin drops, viscous tears +/- chloramphenicol drops
What are the possible causes of white corneas?
Lipid infiltrates
Calcium infiltrates
Corneal scarring
Corneal abcesses
How would lipid infiltrates appear?
Reflective white crystals in superficial stroma. If primary, no vascularisation is present.
How would calcium infiltrates appear?
Non-reflective white crystals in the superficial stroma.
What are the causes of a blue cornea?
Oedema - overhydration of the stroma
