The Nitrogen Cycle Flashcards
1
Q
What is the nitrogen cycle?
A
The recycling of nitrogen through the world.
2
Q
What happens in the nitrogen cycle?
A
- Nitrogen gets down from the air by nitrogen fixing bacteria and lightning and nitrogen fixing in roots.
- The plants then can feed animals who decompose
- This releases ammonia into ammonia ions eventually causing nitrites through nitrifying bacteria and into nitrates by nitrifying bacteria
- Which can be absorbed by nodules on legumes or denitrifying bacteria can release them into the atmosphere.
- Lightning’s energy causes oxygen + nitrogen to make nitrites because lots of energy
3
Q
What are the 4 bacteria in the nitrogen cycle?
A
Decomposers : decompose proteins not ammonia
Nitrifying bacteria : turn ammonia into nitrites and nitrates
Nitrogen - fixing bacteria : turn nitrogen to ammonia into ammonia ions
Denitrifying bacteria : turns nitrates to nitrogen.
4
Q
Why is nitrogen needed for organisms?
A
Nitrogen is needed for protein for growth
5
Q
How do farmer increase nitrates in the soil?
A
By rotating crops around with different crops
By using fertilisers to increase the growth and nitrates, not too much otherwise eutrophication
