Q

What happens in the nitrogen cycle?

A
  1. Nitrogen gets down from the air by nitrogen fixing bacteria and lightning and nitrogen fixing in roots.
  2. The plants then can feed animals who decompose
  3. This releases ammonia into ammonia ions eventually causing nitrites through nitrifying bacteria and into nitrates by nitrifying bacteria
  4. Which can be absorbed by nodules on legumes or denitrifying bacteria can release them into the atmosphere.
  5. Lightning’s energy causes oxygen + nitrogen to make nitrites because lots of energy

Q

What are the 4 bacteria in the nitrogen cycle?

A

Decomposers : decompose proteins not ammonia
Nitrifying bacteria : turn ammonia into nitrites and nitrates
Nitrogen - fixing bacteria : turn nitrogen to ammonia into ammonia ions

Q

How do farmer increase nitrates in the soil?

A

By rotating crops around with different crops

By using fertilisers to increase the growth and nitrates, not too much otherwise eutrophication
