The New Labour Government 1997-2010 Flashcards
What did the New Labour Gov aim to do?
Aimed to put a mix of both left wing and right wing marketisation policies to get rid of class inequality but to keep driving up standards within schools.
Left-wing Policy: Sure Start
Provided free nursery education in deprived areas, to create equal opportunity to boost long term educational performance.
Left-wing Policy: EMA
Provided low-income families with up to £30 a week for educational resources, intended to reduce dropout rates by making education affordable.
Left-wing Policy: FSM
Low-income children got free school meals to try and ensure that hunger didn’t stop them learning, reducing class inequality.
Left-wing Policy: Excellence in Cities
Extra resources given to inner city schools in deprived areas to improve the results for disadvantaged children.
Right-wing Policy: Specialist Schools
Schools could specialise in 10 areas in order to increase choice as well as to meet the needs of individual children.
Right-wing Policy: Value Added On League Tables
How much progress a student made instead of just their achievements, to drive up standards by encouraging more competition. Measured effectiveness in teaching all pupils, not just those who got A*s.
Right-wing Policy: Tuition Fees
Introduced at £1000 per year then rose to £4000 per year. To improve standards at university by being able to afford more resources/facilities.
Right-wing Policy: The New Deal
Gave companies money to employ young people to prevent young people from joining the ranks of the long term unemployed.
Direct Evaluation of the New Labour Gov:
Parents still used cultural capital, made contradictory policies, tuition fees discouraged the WC from going to university, spent too much money that they couldn’t afford.
