Parental Attitudes to Education:
MC parents more likely to take interest in progress, encourage children to stay in school, be better educated. E.g: parents’ evenings, knowing what educational toys to buy, etc.
Many poorer students already a year behind before starting primary school.
Subcultural Attitudes:
A separate set of attitudes.
WC based around present-time orientation and immediate gratification, not thinking about the consequences and vice-versa.
Language:
If you cannot express yourself in speech/writing then you will struggle to achieve.
Restricted Code - informal/slang that doesn’t require detailed explanations. WC
Elaborated Code - more formal, involves detailed explanations. MC.
Cultural and Social Capital:
Cultural: going to museums, reading for pleasure, artistic activities. More likely for MC students.
Social: who to get expert support from, power/influence to help, who can give opportunities. MC. HAVING connections with people who are influential.
Culture Clash: WC clash between home and school as MC students have more cultural capital so appear like better students.
Evaluation:
Subculture: overlooks the role schools play as schools can shape student’s identities.
Parent’s Attitudes: use of measuring not accurate.
Language: groups all the MC/WC together.
Cultural/Social Capital: schools should change culture to fit the WC more.
