Housing:
WC more likely to live in damp, overcrowded housing, more likely to get sick.
No room to do work if you share room with siblings, can disrupt sleep.
Diet and Health:
Lower intakes of energy so difficulty concentrating, affects achievement.
And emotional/behavioural problems.
Catchment Area:
Deprived areas: more crime, poverty, drug use, etc. WC can’t afford to move to catchment areas.
‘selection by mortgage’ divided by who can afford to attend good schools.
Hidden Cost of Education:
Poorer families cannot afford external resources such as uniform, revision books, trips, stationery, etc so cannot participate in activities that will help them learn.
Evaluation:
- Many WC achieve well in education.
- Many schools offer resources outside of school hours.
- Pupil Premium.
- Sure Start/EMA.
