Globalisation and Privatisation Flashcards
How has globalisation affected educational policies?
Marketisation and Privatisation - Encouraged UK Gov to develop policies that will allow them to get involved in the ‘education market’
International Comparisons - Use statistics to compare against the rest of the world.
What is Privatisation?
When things that used to be run by the state get taken over and run by private businesses.
What does Globalisation do?
Allows businesses to make more and more money each year from the expanding global education market.
What is Mcdonaldization?
When a culture adopts the characteristics of a fast food restaurant: efficiency, predictability, calculability and control.
Evaluation of Mcdonaldization:
Schools also care about pupils’ development. Would not have extracurricular activities.
Academisation:
Where state schools that were run by the council get taken over by a private business. Still funded by Gov but have more flexibility with things like term dates, timings of the day, etc.
Privatisation:
Parental Choice, improve failing schools for profit, school efficiency (strengths). Increase inequality, profit making, companies can fail. (Weakness).
