The New Boss Flashcards
This is a bunch of crap, Jack, and you know it.
You can call it what you want, but I am in charge here and I’ve decided that this is where I want you. Now, you don’t have to do as I say if you don’t want to. I can certainly arrange a very nice severance package if you like, but believe me when I say that your days as a project manager are done.
We’ll just see about that.
Have a nice day, Nick.
Have a nice day, Nick.
You having trouble finding your way out?
Why are you doing this?
I have my reasons.
And you’re going to tell me. You and I both know I’m the best project manager here.
Exactly and that’s why I just can’t allow you to do it any more.
What does that… (Nick gets it). I see. It is the promotion. You did hear the story.
What story?
That the majority of the board wanted me to have this job, but your dad decided to give it to you.
Of course I heard it. I’ve been hearing them praise you since the day you got here.
And it’s my fault that I’m good at this job and you - weren’t?
No, not mincing any words now I see.
What’s the point? Apparently I’ve got nothing to lose. You’re scared to death of me, aren’t you?
Don’t flatter yourself. Annoyed, irritated, fed up, maybe, but not scared. I knew sooner or later I’d be getting this job - you just made it later.
But you got it. So why mess with me now?
Because I plan to skate through this job until my father decides to retire or dies and the last thing I need is for you to be around. I also don’t need any more comparisons or any little birdies whispering in my father’s ear about what an asset you are and where your best place might be. Let’s just call what I’m doing - a little preventative medicine.
And you don’t think your father will be able to figure out any of this for himself?
Let me put it this way - my father’s not exactly what I’d call - bright. Not to mention the fact that he does have this soft spot for me. So, no, I don’t think he’ll notice on his own, but…
…but putting me outta sight or getting me to quit should make sure of that.
Exactly! Just like I said, preventative medicine.
