The Neuron (lesson 5) Flashcards
What type of signal is a nerve impulse?
Electrical signal
What does every neuron have?
Contains charged ions that make electrical potential
What ions are important in nerve impulse transmission?
Sodium Na+ and potassium k+ and other negatively charged ions
Where is the neg and pos charge in polarized?
Inside negatively charged, and outside is positively charged
What type of pumps do neurons use and why?
sodium-pottssium pumps that use active transport to keep ions at the right levels
What is repolarization?
Return of electrical charges to their original resting state
What is depolarization?
When a nerve impulse hits a nueron the pumps allow sodium into the neuron which flips the charges and goes through the entire cell
(neg outside, pos inside)
What was the axon terminals contain?
Tiny sacs or vesicles called synaptic vesicles
In axon terminals sacs or vesicles filled with?
Chemicals called neurotransmitters
What is a neurotransmitters used for?
Like a message that tells the next neuron to fire
