Introduction To The Nervous System (lesson 4) Flashcards
What parts include the CNS?
Includes the brain and spinal cord
Whats included in the PNS and what does it do?
Includes all other nerves except the brain and bring info to and from the CNS
What part of the brain controls learning and memory?
What is it connected by?
Cerebrum
Two hemispheres connected by the corpus callosum, each controlling the opposite side of body side
What are the four hemispheres the brain is divided into?
1) Parietal lobe= Voluntary muscle movement (VMM)
2) Frontal lobe= Speech and thinking (S+T)
3) Temporal lobe= Hearing, smelling and tasting (HMT)
4) Occipital lobe= Sight
What part of the brain..
Involuntary actions, mainly muscle coordination and balance. Allows body to move smoothly and important in muscle memory
managing all your thoughts, actions, and input from senses
cerebellum
What are the three important regions of the forebrain structures?
1) Thalamus
* Receives most sensory impulses from body (not smell)
2) Hypothalamus
* Manages body temp, water balance, appetite, BP, intestinal muscle activity, sleep, thirst, emotions and sex drive
3) Pituitary Gland
* Not nervous tissue, part of endocrine system
What are the two main parts of the brain stem?
1) Medulla Oblongata
2) Pons
What type of hormones is realized in the sympathetic division?
Adrenaline and epinephrine
Explain the “fight, flight (or freeze) respond”
when in danger, the hypothalamus release adrenaline and epinephrine, increasing heart rate, dilating pupils, tightening muscles, and slowing digestion.
