The Nervous Tissue Part 2 Flashcards
1
Q
Arachnoid
A
t protects the central nervous system from trauma
2
Q
Pia Mater
A
- loose connective tissue containing many blood vessels
- not in contact with nerve cells or fibers
- squamous cells of mesenchymal origin cover pia matter
- pia mater disappears before the blood vessels are transformed into capillaries
3
Q
Blood-Brain Barrier
A
- functional barrier that allows much tighter control than that in most tissues over the passage of substances moving from blood into the CNS tissue, protecting the nature of the neuronal microenvironment
- main structural component of the BBB is the capillary endothelium in which the cells are tightly sealed together with well developed occluding junction show little or no transcytosis
4
Q
Epidural Hematoma
A
- usually caused by tears in arteries resulting in a build up of blood between the dura mater and the skull
5
Q
Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
A
causes bleeding into the subarachnoid space between arachnoid mater and the pia mater
6
Q
Subdural Hematoma
A
is a type of bleeding in which a collection of blood usually associated with a traumatic brain injury gathers between the inner layer of the dura mater and the arachnoid mater of the meninges surrounding the brain
7
Q
Choroid Plexus
A
- highly specialized tissue that projects as elaborate folds with many villi into the four large ventricles of the brain
- found in the roofs of the third and fourth ventricles and in parts of the walls of the two lateral ventricles
- main function is to remove water from blood and release it as cerebrospinal fluid
8
Q
Cerebrospinal Fluid
A
is clear, has a low density, contains Na+, K+, and Cl- ions but very little protein and its only cells are normally very sparse llymphocytes
9
Q
Peripheral Nervous System
A
- the main components of the peripheral nervous system are the nerves, ganglia, nerve endings
