The Nervous System MOCKS Flashcards
What does the central nervous system consist of
The brain and spinal cords and is linked to the sense organs by nerves
What does stimulation of receptors do
Sends out electrical impulses along nerves into and out of the central nervous system, resulting in rapid responses
structure of a reflex arc
the receptor, an interneuron, and an effector; together, these units form a functional group. Sensory cells carry input from the receptor to a central interneuron, which makes contact with a motor neuron.
what is a synapse
a synapse is a small gap at the end of a neuron that allows a signal to pass from one neuron to the next
An electrical impulse cannot directly cross the gap so a different mechanism has to be used
When the nerve impulse reaches the dendrites at the end of the axon, chemical messengers called neurotransmitters are released.
These chemicals diffuse across the synapse. The chemicals bind with receptor molecules on the membrane of the second neuron.
The binding of neurotransmitter to the receptors stimulates the second neuron to transmit an electrical impulse along its axon. The signal therefore has been carried from one neuron to the next
Simple reflex arc
The hand touches something which is picked up by a sensory receptor in the skin
An impulse I’m the sensory neurone travels to the grey matter of the spinal cord
Neurotransmitters released into the synapse between the sensory and relay neurone
An impulse travels along the relay neurone to the next synapse
Neurotransmitters released into the synapse trigger an impulse in the motor neurone
An impulse travels out of the spinal cord along a motor neurone to an effector organ
The muscle contracts, moving the hand away
