Protein Synthesis Flashcards
An RNA molecule
Is single stranded and includes U instead of T
Stages of transcription
The two strands of the DNA helix are unzipped by breaking of the Hydrogen bonds between base pairs. Caused by (helicase enzyme).
The enzyme RNA polymerase attaches to the DNA .
RNA polymerase moves along the DNA strand. The complementary base pair to form a strand of mRNA
The newly formed strand of mRNA is now ready to leave the nucleus and travel to the ribosome.
Stages of translation
The mRNA strand leaves the nucleus, enters the cytoplasm and attaches to the ribosome.
For every three mRNA bases the ribosome lines up one complementary molecule of tRNA.
tRNA molecules carries specific amino acids to the ribosome.
Used tRNA molecules exit the ribosome and collect another specific amino acid.
Amino acids are joined together to make polypeptides
