Inheritance MOCKS Flashcards
Why is there difference in inherited characteristics
Genes exist in alternative forms called alleles which give rise to differences in inherited characteristics
Homozygous
an individual inherits the same alleles for a particular gene from both parents.
Heterozygous
having two different alleles of a particular gene or genes
phenotype
an individual’s observable traits, such as height, eye color, and blood type
genotype
The expression of the genotype contributes to the individual’s observable traits, called the phenotype.
Codominance
Codominance is a relationship between two versions of a gene
dominant
If the alleles are different, the dominant allele usually will be expressed
recessive
the effect of the other allele, called recessive, is masked.
some alleles cause
diseases which can be inherited
