The nervous system and functions Flashcards
What is the Nervous system
System of nerves and cells that carries messages around body.
The central Nervous system is made of two parts
CNS- Central nervous sustem
PNS- Peripheral Nervous sysetm
What is The CNS
What does it do
= composed of the spinal cord and brain
Functions
- Spinal cord allows brain to COMMUNICATE with the rst of body
- Runs from base of ( Brainstem) to lower back
What is The PNS
What does it do
= is any nerve outside the brain and spinal cord
Functions
1. Communicate info from organs, glands, muscles ——> Brain
- Communicate info from
Brain ——> Organs, muscles, glands
PNS has Two subdivisions such as:
Somatic—— Automatic
Somatic
Responsible for carrying messengers from the BRAin —-> SKELETAL muscles
- Voluntary movement
- messengers from senses to brain to be processed
Somatic
( Motor Nuerons ( nerves) )
- Directly attached to muscles
- Initiates voluntary movement
- Communicates to CNS
Somatic
( Sensory nuerons ( nerves))
- Carry messengers from senses to CNS so the brain can INTERACT with it’s ENVIROMENT.
Automatic nervous system
Controls body’s NON-skeletal muscles ( eg. heart, pupils, internal organs, glands)
( It does everything we DON’T think about)
Automatic
Sympathetic nervous system
- Prepares us for actions
- Fight or flight
- freeze
Automatic
Parasympathetic nervous system
- Calms our body
- returns us to baseline/ normal
( homeostasis)
