The nervous system Flashcards
What is a stimuli
a change in the environment
What is a receptor
cells in sensory organs that detect changes in the environment
What is a coordinator
what processes information and decides how the body should respond (CNS)
What is an effector
what carries out the action, could be a muscle contracting or a gland secreting
what is a response
the action carried out by the effector
describe the process in the nervous system that occurs when a stimuli is detected
stimuli occurs
receptors detect the stimuli
sensory neutrons carry messages from the receptors to coordinator
coordinator (cns) makes a decision
motor neurone carry message from coordinator to effector
effector contracts or secretes chemical
that action carried out is the response
stimuli—> receptors–?->coordinator–?-> effector—>response
which neurons carry these messages
the sensory neuron
the motor neuron
what are 3 ways neutrons are adapted
- long to carry impulses quickly over large distances
- dendrites increase surface area to receive impulses as quickly as possible
- myelin sheath is made out of fat which is an insulator, impulses jump between gap meaning they’re quicker
what is the order of a reflex arc
stimuli->receptors->sensory neuron-> relay neuron-> motor neuron-> effector -> response
describe what happens in a reflex arc
stimuli is detected by receptors
the sensory neuron carries messages to the relay neuron
the relay neuron carries it to the motor neuron
the motor neuron carries the message to the effector
this leads to a response
what happens at a synapse
when an electrical impulse arrives at a synapse it triggers sacs to release chemicals called neurotransmitters
they diffuse across the cell and bind to chemical receptors on the next neuron
