Ecology Flashcards
what do we call the organism at each trophic level
tertiary consumer
secondary consumer
primary consumer
producer
what does biomass mean
mass of the living organism
how much biomass is transferred at each trophic level
10%
what are the 3 reasons not all biomass is transferred
- organisms don’t normally eat every part
- some eaten parts are not absorbed
- most of absorbed nutrients are used for respirstion
what is the main source of energy for most communities of living organisms
sun light
how much energy from light is used for photosynthesis?
where is this energy stored
1%
substances that make up the cells of the plant
what are the 4 organisms involved in the carbon cycle
plants
animals
microorganisms
fossil fuels
how do each of these organisms return carbon back into the atmosphere
plants- respiration
animals- respiration
microorganisms- respiration through decay
fossil fuels- being burnt
what is the carbon cycle in 5 steps
- plants photosynthesise to take carbon from the atmosphere and respire to return it
- animals eat the plants then respire to release the carbon back into the atmosphere
- when plants and animals die they decay by microorganisms which release carbon as a product of respiration
- if decay occurs in anaerobic conditions animals and plants are slowly converted into fossil fuels
- fossil fuels are burnt to release carbon back into the atmosphere
