The Nervous System Flashcards
What are the main parts of the eye?
1) Lens
2) Pupil
3) Cornea
4) Retina
5) Optical nerve
6) Iris
What are the functions of each part of the eye?
1) Lens - Focusing light
2) Pupil - Allows light into the eye
3) Cornea - Outer protective layer
4) Retina - Detects light
5) Optical nerve - Carries signal to the brain
6) Iris - Coloured part - Controls size
What is the difference between monocular and binocular vision?
Monocular Vision - Eyes further apart; good field of view but poor depth perception
Binocular Vision - Eyes closer together; poor field of view but good depth perception
What is meant by ‘Accommodation’ in terms of eyesight?
How the eye adapts to objects as they move closer or further away.
What type of lens is used to correct short sightedness?
Concave
What type of lens is used to correct long sightedness?
Convex
What does ‘CNS’ stand for?
Central Nervous System - the brain and the spinal cord
What is the function of a reflex?
It is a fast protective response to prevent injury.
What is the sequence of a reflex arc?
Stimulus -> Receptor -> Sensory Neurone -> Relay Neurone -> Motor Neurone -> Effector -> Response
What surround the axon of a motor neurone?
A sheath
List a few adaptations of neurones
Long; branched endings (dendriles) and insulating sheath
What is the name of the substance that travels across a synapse?
Acetylcholine
