Staying in Balance Flashcards
What does your body do when you get too warm.
1) Vasodilation - Blood vessels expand and get closer to skin
2) Sweat
What is meant by ‘Homeostasis’?
Keep our body’s internal environment constant.
How does sweating keep us cool?
Water is excreted onto the skin where it evaporated off and takes lots of heat energy with it.
What is the danger of a low body temperature?
Hypothermia
What is meant by ‘Negative Feedback’?
The process the body puts in place to return internal body levels to normal - EG too cold - Shiver to warm back up
How does vasoconstriction keep you warm
Blood is diverted from the skin so heat is not easily lost.
What is diabetes?
When your body cannot control your blood sugar levels
How is type 1 different from type 2?
Type 1 = when the body can’t produce its own insulin, so it needs to be injected
Type 2 = Body does not produce enough insulin but it can be controlled with an appropriate diet and exercise
How can an insulin pump help those with Diabetes?
They no longer have to inject themselves.
