Controlling Plant Growth Flashcards
What is the name of the type of hormone that controls plant growth?
Auxins
Which part of the plant is negatively phototropic?
The root
Which part of the plant is positively geotropic?
The root
What does the term ‘phototropism’ mean?
Growth in response to light
How do auxins affect the cells in the shoot?
They cause them to elongate.
How do auxins respond when a shoot is hit by light from one side only?
They move to the shaded side of the shoot and cause cells on that side to elongate.
If the cells on one side pf the shoot elongate, what happens to the direction?
The shoot will grow towards the light
Name some uses of plant hormones in industry.
1) Selective weedkiller
2) Growing roots
3) Germinating seeds
4) Fruit ripening
Describe how Darwin investigated Auxins.
Darwin treated the tips of shoots in different ways to see how that might affect the growth of the shoot.
