The Nervous System Flashcards
Stimulus
Change in the environment that causes a response
Receptor
A cell sensitive to a stimulus (eg pain receptor)
Effector
Cell that responds to a stimulus (eg muscle moves)
Dendron
Carries impulse towards cell body
Axons
Carries impulses away from cell body’s
Schwann cells
Makes the myelin sheath
Myelin sheath
Fatty membrane wrapped around an axon or dendron which speeds up an electrical impulse
Nodes of ranvier
Gaps in myelin sheath that speed up impulse transmission
Ganglion
Group of cell bodies located outside the CNS
Threshold
Minimum stimulus needed to generate an electrical impulse
‘All or nothing’ law
If threshold is not reached, no impulse is sent
Synapses
Region where two neurone come into close contact but do not touch
Synaptic cleft
The gap between two neurons
Reflex action
And automatic in voluntary unconscious response to a stimulus
Neuron
A nerve cell
