The Nervous System Flashcards
Two parts of the nervous system
CNS and PNS
What is the CNS made up of
Brain and spinal cord
What is the PNS made up of
Sensory and motor nerves
The spinal cord
It is made of sensory and motor nerves which send info between body and brain
The brain
Interprets info
Makes decisions and sends them through to the spinal cord to parts of the body
Sensory nerves
Info from exteroceptors, proprioceptors and interoceptors
They tell brain what’s happening inside and outside the body
Motor nerves
Takes info from brain to muscles and organs
Exteroceptors
Ears and eyes
Proprioceptors
Muscles and joints
Interoceptors
Heart and lungs
Two parts of the PNS
Somatic nervous system- deals with info from senses
Autonomic nervous system- deals with info from internal organs
Two sub systems of the autonomic system
Sympathetic- prepares body for fight or flight
Parasympathetic- calms and relaxes body
Information processing in the brain
-When someone is learning a skill they look at demonstration and take in instructions
-This info is transformed into neural info and sent to brain, this is known as input
-Selective perception then takes place in the brain, brain selects info that you think is important and disregards the rest, this is known as short term sensory storage
- the info is temporarily stored as short term memory
-A limited amount of info can be stored as stm for up to 20 seconds. During this time the long term memory compares info with info already stored to figure out if info is worth retaining, if it is info is stored in ltm
-The more you use the info the easier it becomes to process and more likely to learn the skill
-LTM has unlimited capacity
- a response generator handles your response to the info, this is known as output.
Function of brain in the performance of a skill
STSS- selects info that is imports and discards all other info
STM- the selected info is held as working memory for up to 20s
LTM- during the time this makes sense of the info, it compares it to previous experiences and decides to test actions to be taken and this is then transmitted to muscles.
