The Digestive System Flashcards
About the digestive system
Slows down vigorously during physical activity.
The things we eat(ingestion) is broken down into smaller pieces(digestion)
When they are broken down they pass through the intestine wall and dissolve into the blood (absorption)
The nutrients are used as fuel for the muscles to create energy and waste is excreted
How it works
Chemically- enzymes produced by salivary glands, liver and pancreas
Mechanically- teeth, tougher and muscles in alimentary canal.
In the mouth
Food is broken down mechanically by chewing and chemically by saliva
In the stomach
Food is broken down mechanically by the action of stomach muscles
And chemically by stomach acids, bile from the liver and from enzymes, hormones and insulin in the pancreas.
In the intestine
Nutrients are absorbed into the blood
Small intestine is where absorption and transfer of molecule to the blood happen
Large intestine= absorption and excretion, absorbs sodium and excretes waste products
Short term effects of exercise on the digestive system
Blood is redirected away from the digestive system to the heart, lungs and working muscles
Slows down to conserve energy for exercise
Digestion process can Improve- muscles become stronger so food gets passes easier
