The Nervous System Flashcards
Role of the Nervous System
To respond to stimuli and survive and prevent getting hurt
What is the Central Nervous System
Is the brain and Spinal chord
Connected to the body by sensory neurons and motor neurons
Role of the Sensory Neurons
Carry information as electrical impulses from receptor cells to the CNS
Role of the Motor Neurons
Neurons that carry impulses from the CNS to effectors
Role of the Effectors
Includes muscles and glands that respond to nervous impulses
What responds to stimuli
Receptor cells
Types of receptor cells
Taste receptors
Sound receptors
Light receptor cells (eye)
What are responces to electrical impulses
Impulses that bring change
Types of effectors
Muscles and glands
What is a synapse?
The connection between two neurons
What occurs at a synapse?
Nerve signal is transferred by chemicals that diffuse across the gap, which triggers another electrical signal in the next neuron
Types of neurons
sensory neurons
relay neurons
motor neurons
Role of the Sensory neuron
The nerve cell that transmits electrical impulses from receptors in the sense organs to the CNS.
Role of the Relay neuron
The nerve cell that transmits electrical impulses from sensory neurons to motor neurons
Role of the Motor Neuron
The nerve cell that carries electrical impulses from the CNS to effectors such as muscles or glands
