Reproduction Flashcards
What is sexual reproduction?
When the sperm fertilises the egg
Two different organism
Genetically different to both parents
Meiosis
What is asexual reproduction?
One parent so the offspring is genetically identical
Mitosis
How does meiosis work?
The cell duplicates the genetic information and arranges itself into pairs
The pairs are pulled apart (cell divides) and some of the fathers and mothers chromosomes go into each cell
In the second division the chromosomes line up before being pulled apart which creates 4 genetically different cells
Advantages of sexual reproduction
Variation in species
Can become more adapted to the environment
More disease resistant
Allows natural selection
Advantages of asexual reproduction
Only needs one parent
Faster and takes less energy
Examples of organisms that can do both sexual and asexual reproduction
Malaria -sexual in mosquito and asexually in human host
Species of fungus through spores
Plants such as strawberries
What do different genes cause?
Genetic variation
What are characteristics alos influenced by?
The environment that the organism lives and grows in
(e.g. plants with more sunlight are taller and greener in comparison to plants with less light)
