The Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
What are effectors?
A
- Effectors respond to nervous impulses and bring about a change.
- Muscles and glands are known as effectors, they respon in different ways.
- Muscles contract in response to a nervous impulse, whereas glands secrete hormones.
2
Q
What are receptors?
A
- Receptors are the cells that detect stimuli.
- There are many different types of receptors, such as taste receptors on the tongue and sound receptors in the ears.
- Receptors can form part of larger, complex organs. E.g. the retina in the eye is covered in light receptor cells.
3
Q
What is the Central Nervous System (CNS)?
A
- In vertabrates, this consists of the brain and spinal cord only. In mammals, the CNS is connected to the body by sensory neurones and motor neurones.
4
Q
What are sensory neurones?
A
- Sensory neurones are the neurones that carry information as electrical impulses from the receptors to the CNS.
5
Q
What are motor neurones?
A
- Motor neurones are the neurones that carry electrical impulses from the the CNS to effectors.
6
Q
What is a synapse?
A
- A synapse is a junction between two neurones.
- It allows for the tranmission of electric nerve impulses in the nervous system.
7
Q
How does information pass a synapse?
A
- Neurotransmitters are released into the synaptic cleft.
- The neurotransmitters diffuse through the synapse where they bind to the receptors on the post-synaptic neurone.
8
Q
What are reflex actions?
A
- Reflex actions are rapid responses to harmful stimuli, protecting the body from injury.
- They don’t involve the coscious part of your brain.
- There are more synapses in the brain and synapses slow down transmission.
