The nervous system Flashcards
What is the peripheral nervous system?
All the nerves outside of the nervous system, transmits messages to and from the central nervous system. Splits into the Somatic and Autonomic nervous system.
What is the central nervous system?
A system involving the brain and the spinal cord. Responsible for control of behaviour and physiological processes.
What is the brain?
Responsible for control of behaviour and physiological processes. In the central nervous system.
What does the spinal cord do?
Transfers messages between the brain and body. In control of simple reflex actions. Spinal nerves connect with different parts of the body. In the central nervous system.
What does the somatic nervous system do?
Transmits information between sense organs and the central nervous system. Controls skeletal muscles and has motor pathways allowing the brain to control the movement. In the peripheral nervous system.
What is the Autonomic nervous system?
Transmits information between internal bodily organs. Controls vital automatic functions, heartbeat etc. Split into the sympathetic branch and the parasympathetic branch. In the peripheral nervous system.
What is the sympathetic branch?
Body’s response to emergencies, readies the body for action. Brings the fight or fight response when met with danger. In the autonomic nervous system.
What is the parasympathetic branch?
Brings the rest and digest response after meeting danger. In the autonomic nervous system.
