A system of communication
What is the function of the endocrine system
Regulate the activity of cells and organs in the body.
How does the endocrine system regulate cells of the body
Through chemical messengers called hormones.
What is a gland
An organ that secretes hormones directly into a blood stream rather than through a duct.
What is the pituitary gland known as
The master gland as it controls the release or hormones from all other endocrine glands.
What does the pineal gland secrete
Melatonin
What does the pineal gland secrete
Melatonin-Responsible for sleep wake cycle, dark and light.
What does the thyroid gland secrete
Thyroxine
What does the adrenal gland secrete
Adrenaline
What does the pancreas secrete
Insulin
What do the ovaries secrete
Oestrogen
What does thyroxine do
Regulate metabolism by aiding heart and digestive functioning.
What do the testes secrete
Testosterone
What does adrenaline do
Responsible for flight or fight response by increasing heart rate and contracting blood vessels.
What does Insulin do
Responsible for blood glucose levels by allowing cells to absorb glucose from the blood.
What does Oestrogen do
Controls the regulation of female reproductive systems and the development of female features in puberty.
What does Testosterone do
Responsible for development of male sex characteristics during puberty.
