the nervous system Flashcards
how does information pass from receptors to the CNS?
pass along cells as electrical impulses
what is the CNS made up of?
brain and spinal cord
what is the role of the CNS?
coordinates the response of effectors
order of nervous system
stimulus –> receptor –> sensory neurone –> CNS –> motor neurone –> effector –> response
receptors
cells that detect stimuli
what do effectors do?
respond to nervous impulses and bring about a change
what do muscles / glands do in response to hormones?
glands - secrete hormones
muscles - contract in response to a nervous impulse
what is a synapse?
the connection between two neurones
how do synapses work?
the nerve signal is transferred by chemicals which diffuse across the gap, and these chemicals then set off a new electrical signal in the next neurone
