hormones in reproduction Flashcards
what do reproductive hormones cause in puberty?
secondary sex characteristics
examples of secondary sex characteristics
voice deepens, breasts develop, body hair
what is the main female reproductive hormone?
oestrogen
where is oestrogen produced?
ovaries
what hormones are produced in the ovaries?
oestrogen, progesterone
day 1-5
menstruation: lining of uterus breaks down and passes out of the vagina
day 5-14
an egg cell starts to mature in the ovary, lining of uterus begins to build up again
day 14
ovulation: egg cell released from the ovary
day 14-28
egg cell travels along the fallopian tube towards the uterus, lining remains thick awaiting arrival of fertilised egg
day 28
if egg not fertilised, lining begins to break down and cycle repeats
FSH where produced? cause? interaction?
-secreted by pituitary
-causes maturation of egg
-stimulates ovaries to release oestrogen
where is oestrogen produced? what does it cause? how does it interact with other hormones?
-produced in ovaries
-causes build up of lining
-stops FSH so only one egg matures in cycle
-stimulates pituitary to release LH
LH where produced? cause? interaction?
-produced by pitiuitary
-stimulates mature egg release, responsible for ovulation
-causes production of progesterone
-inhibits oestrogen
progesterone where produced? cause? interaction?
-produced in ovaries
-stops LH
-carries on if pregnant
-maintains lining of uterus during middle of cycle and pregnancy
order of hormones
FOLP
how do they all interact?
-FSH stimulates oestrogen
-oestrogen stops FSH
-LH stops oestrogen, causes progesterone
-progesterone stops LH so only one egg released
-oestrogen and progesterone levels drop so FSH not inhibited
