The nervous system Flashcards
What systems make up the nervous system?
The central and the peripheral
What makes up the central nervous system?
The spinal cord and brain
What makes up the peripheral nervous system?
The somatic and the autonomic nervous system
What makes up the autonomic nervous system?
The sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous system
What is the function of the autonomic nervous system?
To maintain normal function of bodily systems in response to demands
What is the function of the somatic nervous system?
To control voluntary movement
What does the autonomic nervous system control?
Involuntary reaction, such as heart beating and digestion
What does the sympathetic nervous system do?
Reacts to fear to prepare for ‘fight’ or ‘flight’
What is the effect of the sympathetic nervous system?
Dilates pupil, inhibits flow of saliva, accelerates heartbeat, dilates bronchi, inhabits peristalsis and secretion, secretes adrenaline and inhibits bladder contraction
What does the parasympathetic nervous system do?
Relaxes the body after fear
What is the effect of the parasympathetic nervous system?
Relaxes pupils, stimulates flow of saliva, slows heartbeat, constricts bronchi, stimulates peristalsis and secretion and contracts bladder
