Localisation of function Flashcards
What is the brain made of?
2 hemispheres which are contra-lateral
What does contra-lateral mean?
The left hemisphere controls the left side of the brain etc
What was the original theory of the brain function?
Holistic theory - all parts of the brain are involved in thoughts and actions
What is localisation of function?
Different areas of the brain are responsible for different behaviours, processes or activities
How many lobes are in the brain?
4
What are the lobes of the brain?
Frontal, parietal, occipital and temporal lobe
How many areas of the brain are there?
6
What are the areas of the brain?
Motor, somatosensory, visual, auditory, Broca’s and Wernicke’s
Where is the motor area found?
In the frontal lobe
What does the motor area do>
Regulates movement
Where is the somatosensory area?
In the parietal lobe
What does the somatosensory area do?
It processes sensory information such as touch
Where is the visual area found?
In the occipital lobe
What does the visual area do?
It receives and processes information
Where is the auditory area found?
In the temporal lobe
What does the auditory area do?
Analyses speech-based information
What are the language areas?
Broca and Wernicke’s area
Where is Broca’s area found?
In the frontal lobe in left hemisphere
What does Broca’s area do?
Speech production
Where is Wernicke’s area found?
In the temporal lobe in the left hemisphere
What does Wernicke’s area do?
Language comprehension
What is evidence for localisation of function?
Brain scan where Wernicke’s area was used during a listening test and Broca’s area during a reading task
What does brain scan evidence show?
Semantic and episodic memory are located in different parts of the pre-frontal cortex
What are the advantages of brain scans as evidence?
They are objective and scientific
