The nervous system Flashcards
Neurons
the actual nerve cells of the body
cerebrum
involved in conscious thought, memory and interpreting sensory info
cerebellum
controls skeletal movements such as running and swimming
hypothalamus
controls the body’s automatic systems.
physical effects of emotions, hunger and thirst.
medulla oblongata
parts of the brain stem that regulates vital body functions
pons
helps the medulla oblongata in regulating respiration
axons
carries nerve impulses away from the cell body in the neuron
spinal cord
bundle of nerves in the spinal cavity
limbic system
part of the brain that helps generate and regulate emotions and coordinate overall brain activity
reflex
a signal from the spinal cord to protect the body, and makes the muscles move before the brain knows what is happening
brain
most important and complex part of the nervous system
controls bodily functions
autonomic nervous system
unconsciously controlled functions of the body
central nervous system
brain and spinal cord work together to communicate with the rest of the body
What are the 2 parts of the nervous system ?
central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
what are the 3 types of neurons ?
sensory neurons
motor neurons
interneurons
frontal lobe
part of the brain that is associated w/ personality, judgement and self controls
parietal lobes
analyzes the senses.
makes judgements about shape and texture
meninges
triple layer of tissue that protects brain and spinal cord
what does neuro- refer to ?
the brain
What doctor treats diseases and disorders of the nervous system ?
neurologist
What side of the brain is responsible for creativity ?
right side
what part of the brain is responsible for vision ?
occipital lobes
what part of the brain is responsible for seanses ?
temporal lobes
who made the world’s smallest nerf gun out of DNA?
Mark Rober
All the nerve fibers connecting the brain and the spinal cord must pass through; what?
brain stem
What sensory receptors are responsible for touch and pressure ?
mechancoreceptors
What sensory receptors respond to heat and cold ?
thermoreceptors
What nerve endings are sensitive to chemicals ?
chemoreceptors
What are the 3 types of neurons ?
sensory
motor
interneurons
which neurons transmit information to the CNS from the senses and pain ?
sensory
which neurons relay singnals from the CNS to other parts of the body ?
motor
which neurons are found only in the CNS and are responsible for information processing by the brain and spinal cord?
interneurons
What is the tough outermost layer of the eye consists of what 2 parts ?
sclera (white part)
cornea ( transparent part)
Which is the colored part of the eye called ?
iris
what is the center of the iris called ? This is where light enters into the eye
pupil
This is the thin layer of light sensitive nerve cells at the back of the eye
retina
What are the 2 types of cells in the retina ?
rod cells and cone cells
What is the optic nerve ?
These are the nerve fibers where nerve impulses from the retina are sent to the occipital lobe of the brain.
What is hyperopia ?
unable to clearly focus on objects nearby - Also called farsightedness
What is myopia ?
unable to to clearly focus on distant objects; also known as near sightedness
What are pain receptors ?
brain nerve endings that react to a particular type of strong stimulus
What are the 3 parts of a neuron ?
cell body / dendrite / axon
What does the dendrite of the neuron do ?
receives the impulse from other neurons and sends them to the cell body
what does the axon of the neurons do ?
carries nerve impulses away from the cell body
what does the cell body of the neuron do ?
This is also found on the spinal cord.
sends and receives nerve impulses and controls the cell’s growth.
What is the result of fears and apprehensions that interfere w/ everyday life?
(irrational or excessive fears)
anxiety disorders
This can be simply defined as the challenges that face us in life and our responses to those challenges.
stress
What eating disorders mainly affects females and is described as self induced starvation ?
anorexia
What eating disorder is described as binge eating followed by vomiting ?
bulimia
HOw do scientists rate the loudness of sounds ?
decibels
what part of the ear is a sound gathering trumpet and a short tube?
auditory canal
this is a thin membrane that is stretched across the end of the auditory canal
eardrum
this is a snail shaped fluid filled chamber within the temporal bone
cochlea
