The Nervous System Flashcards
Sensory function
Sensory receptors, detect internal stimuli and external stimuli, and this sensory information is then carried into brain and spinal cord through cranial and spinal nerves
Functions of the nervous system
Sensory function
Motor function
Integrative function
Integrative function
The nervous system integrates sensory information by analysing and storing some of it, and by making decisions for appropriate reasons
Motor function
One sensor information is integrated of the nervous system made select an appropriate motor response by activating affecters, three cranial and spinal nerves stimulation of the effectors causes muscles to contract and glands to secrete
Neurons
They are nerve cells
Possess electrical, excitability, the ability to respond to a stimulus, and convert it into an action potential
Action potential
A nerve impulse
An electrical signals propagates along the surface of the membrane of a neuron
The central nervous system
Consists of brain and spinal cord
Processes, different kinds of incoming sensory information
Peripheral nervous system
Includes all nervous tissue outside the CNS
May be subdivided further into a somatic, nervous system, an autonomic, nervous system, or an enteric nervous system
Somatic nervous system
Consists of sensory neurons that convey information from somatic receptors in head body wall and limbs to the CNS and motor neurons that conducts impulses from the CNS to skeletal muscles only
Autonomic nervous system
Consist of sensory neurons that convey information from autonomic sensory receptors to the CNS and motor neurons that conduct nerve impulses
