Organ level
Organs are structures that are composed of two or more types of tissues
Tissue level
Tissues are groups of cells
Types of tissue – epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous
System level
A system consists of related organs with a similar function
Sometimes an organ is part of one or more system
Metabolism
The sum of all the chemical processes that occur in the body
Catabolism
The breakdown of complex chemical substances into simpler components
Anabolism
Building up of complex chemical substances from smaller simpler components
Growth
Growth is the increase in body size that results from an increase in the size of existing cells, an increase in the number of cells, or both
Differentiation
The development of a cell from an unspecialised to specialised state
Prone position
Body facing down
Supine position
Body facing up
Superior
Towards the head or upper
Inferior
Away from the head or below/lower
Anterior (ventral)
Nearer to or at the front of the body
Posterior (dorsal)
Nearer to or at the back of the body
Medial
Nearer to midline
