The nervous system Flashcards
Two components of the CNS
Spinal chord
Brain
Four main areas of the brain
Cerebrum
Cerebellum
Diencephalon
Brain Stem
Function of the cerebrum
- Largest part
- Divided into: frontal lobe (speech), occipital lobe (visual)
Function of the cerebellum
- Controls motor and balance skills
- Abnormalities can result in problems such as epilepsy
Function of the diencephalon
Divided into Thalamus (relay station for impulses) and hypothalamus (regulates temp, hunger)
Function of the brain stem
- Regulates automatic functions: breathing, heart beat
The peripheral nervous system’s two parts:
Somatic and Autonomic
Function of somatic
Made up of twelve pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves.
These nerves have sensory and motor neurons
Function of autonomic
Regulates involuntary actions
Autonomic two parts
Sympathetic and parasympathetic
Function of the sympathetic
Fight or flight. Neurons travel from the SNS to organs and glands. SNS causes the body to release stored energy.
Effects on the SNS: Sympathetic
- Increased pupil size
- Increased heart rate
- Increased breathing rate
- Bronchi dilate
- Glycogen converted to glucose
Function of the parasympathetic
Relaxes an individual after emergency. Rest and Digest
