The endocrine system Flashcards
1
Q
What is the hypothalamus
A
The brain area that controlling pituitary glands
2
Q
What is the pituitary glands
A
Secrete different hormones
3
Q
What are the Adrenal glands
A
Help trigger fight or flight.
Located on top of kidneys
4
Q
What do hormones do
A
- Only affect target cells
- Cells have receptors for that hormones
- Too much/little can result in dysfunctions
5
Q
Two main parts of the adrenal glands
A
Anterior and Posterior and the cortex and medulla
6
Q
Anterior glands
A
Release ACTH as a response to stress.
ACTH stimulates adrenal glands to produce cortisol.
Also release FSH and LH - stimulate ovaries and testes
7
Q
Posterior glands
A
Posterior releases oxytocin - stimulates contraction of ovaries during childbirth
8
Q
Elabd
A
found oxytocin is needed for healthy maintenance and repair in rats
9
Q
Hormones produced by adrenal glands
A
- Adrenal cortex produces cortisol
- Cortisol production in increased with stress
- Cortex produced aldosterone
- Medulla releases adrenaline and noradrenaline
