Synaptic transmission Flashcards
Neurons consist of what 3 features:
Dendrites
Axon
Myelin sheath
Function of dendrites
At one end of the neuron receives signals from the other neuron. connected to the cell body.
Function of Axon
Carries impulse to axon terminal
Function of Myelin sheath
Covers the axon, increases speed of transmission
Synaptic gap
In-between the pre-synaptic nerve ending and the post synaptic nerve ending
What are vesicles
Sacs at the end of the axon. They contain neurotransmitters that get transferred across the synaptic cleft
Excitatory Neurotransmitter
“on switch”. Increase the chance that an excitatory signal is sent to the post-synaptic cell, which is then more likely to fire
Inhibitory Neurotransmitter
Calming the body, including sleep and filtering out any unnecessary excitatory signals
