The Nervous System Flashcards
What is the difference between the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system
The central nervous system is the brain and the spinal cord, the peripheral nervous system is every other part of the nervous system
What is a stimulus
A stimulus is a change in the enviroment
What type of neuron connects a receptor to the CNS
A sensory neuron
What is an effector
A muscle or gland along a motor neurone that responds according to the stimulus
What type of neuron connects the CNS to an effector
A motor neuron
Describe the reflex arc
Stimulus detected by a receptor
Impulse passed along sensory neuron to CNS
Impulse passed along motor neurone to effector
Effector brings about the response
How do electrical signals get transmitted
The electrical impulses are passed along the axon of a neurone, and are passed to other neurones which are connected by dendrites. When a nerve impulse arrives at the end of one neurone it releases neurotransmitter molecules from the synaptic vessel which then diffuse across the synaptic cleft and then bind with the receptors on the next neurons triggering another impulse carrying the impulse on. The neurones are protected by a myelin sheath which speeds up the electrical impulse.
What is the order of the CNS response
Stimulus Receptor Sensory neurone CNS Motor neurone Effector Response
