Who is Baron von Steuben?
He was a Prussian military officer who instilled discipline and trained troops in the American revolution war. He laid the foundation for the NCO corp.
What is the blue book?
It was a book of regulations for the order and discipline of the troops of the United States. It laid the the foundation for the army organization and was created by baron von Steuben. It also defined what an NCO’s duties and responsibilities were.
What are the 6 NCO common competencies?
They are readiness, leadership, training management, communication, operations, and program management
What is mission command?
Mission command is the command and powers that empowers subordinate decision making and decentralized execution appropriate to the situation
What is the leadership requirements model?
The leadership requirements model aligns expectations with a leaders activities and personnel management. It centers around BE,KNOW, and DO.
What are the three leader attributes?
Character, presence, and Intellect
What are the three leader competencies?
Leads,develops, and achieves
What are the differences between the leaders attributes and competencies?
Competencies are skills that can be trained on and attributes encompass personal characteristics which are molded over time
What is the difference between compliance and commitment?
Compliance is directed at a followers behavior, generally effective for short term and immediate results
Commitment is directed at a follower’s thinking, generally effective for long term and lasting change.
What is positional power?
The authority one has from filling a spot or position.
What is personal power?
The authority given by followers out of respect or admiration for the leader.
What is BE, KNOW, DO?
It’s the army’s focus on an NCO.
- Be physically fit, a role model, proficient
- Know you’re self, your soldier, mission and capabilities
- Do what is right, lead from the front, develop seniors, peers and subordinates

Direct, organizational, and strategic

Institutional, operational, and self-development.
