- Led by Ernst Rohm
-job was to intimidate opponents and beat up political opposition. There were 3 million of them.
Night of Long Knives - Why it occurred .
- ## Relationship between Rohm and Hitler has deteriorated as Hitler made vague promises to the SA and they felt they’d been been betrayed as he didnt live up to his promises.
Night of Long Knives
- July 29th- 30th Hitler sent men to kill/arrest Rohm and other political opponents,
85 people were killed and Hitler claimed his actions were legal as those killed were plotters trying to overthrow the government.
What consequences did the Night of The Long Knives have?
- Reduced the power of the SA
-Gained Hitler the loyalty of the army
-Stamped out political opposition and sent a message about of Hitler’s brutality and ruthlessness.
Reichstag Fire
- 27th Feb 1933, Reichstag was set alight and inside Marinus Van der Lubbe (communist) was caught inside. He confessed and claimed this was a wider communist plot to destablise Germany.
What happened on the 30th January 1933?
- Hindenburg offered Hitler the position of Chancellor as he’d grown concerned with with Hitler’s popularity in attempts to control, manipulate and use his popularity.
What was the significance of the Reichstag Fire?
- Seen as a national emergency and evidence of communist threat
4000 communists were arrested during the week including 100 members of the Reichstag.
Article 48
- stated in a national emergency the president/chancellor could make laws without the Reichstag.
Enabling Act
-passed in March 1933
-allowed Hitler to pass laws without the Reichstag
–Essentially end of democracy.
