Nazi Propaganda messages (5)

  • aim was to unite German People and convince them Nazis would make them strong
    -Germans encouraged to hate countries that signed treaty of Versailles
    “Hitler Myth” created by Joseph Goebbels made hitler sound like a God and saviour
  • Jews and communists were the causes of Germany’s problems.
  • Encouraged a return to traditional German Values and culture

What was the SS and how did they create terror?

A
  • Led by Heinrich Himmler
  • Began as a bodyguard for Hitler and were feared for their cruelty
    -They were loyal to Hitler and ended up setting up concentration camps for “enemies of the state”

Who were the Gestapo and how did they create terror?

  • Secret police and their job was to protect the German public
  • Other focuses included rooting out political opposition, Jews and homosexuals.
    15,000 agents
    Methods included harsh interrogations and imprisonments without trial, tapping telephones and opening mail to gather info.

How were concentration camps used to create terror?

A
  • to hold political prisoners (Communists and socialists) and anybody else considered dangerous to the Nazis.
  • Gradually expanded to hold jews, religious opponents and work-shy
    -Later turned into death camps
    -Strict rules with harsh punishment for minor offences.

  • In 1933 only 3 percent of German daily newspapers were controlled by Nazis
    By 1944. this rose to 82 percent.
    This meant Nazis could control what was published

  • providing them the opportunity to show the power of Nazi Germany and its wealth and also the superiority of the Aryan (Master Race)
    However, the success of Jesse Owens (an African American who won 4 gold medals) undermined Hitler’s message.
