Why would someone not resist the Nazis?
A
- Not everyone would’ve been aware of the scale of their crimes and penalties were extremely harsh.
-Nazi’s had taken away hope of rescue and safety - People had to make difficult choices such as looking after their families or surviving the war in general.

- Acts that attempted to hinder the Nazi’s war effort or to help Jewish people or the Nazis’ enemies using violent or non-violent methods.

Examples of Acts of Resistance?
A
- People hiding Jews
-1943 Warsaw ghetto launched an armed revolt against Nazi’s
-French and Polish movements supplied info to countries fighting Germany and disrupted German communications by destroying train lines and cutting telephone wire.

Examples of Acts of Collaboration?
A
- Vichy Government in southern France which voluntarily persecuted Jews, deporting them to Nazi Death Camps.
-Doing German soldiers’ laundry, denouncing fellow citizens and taking part in mass killings

What happened to people when they arrived at Death Camps?
A
- Belongings would be confiscated.
-New arrivals would be sent to gas chambers disguised as shower blocks and their bodies would be cremated.
-Forced labour (hair cut, tattoed with a number and issued with striped uniform)
-Victims of medical experiments

What was Nazi rule like in Eastern Europe? (Poland)
A
- Due to land being taken away from Germany due to treaty of Versailles, the Nazi’s had always wanted the polish territory back
- Nazi’s though of poles as sub-human
- 2 million non Jewish poles forced into slave labour
-3 million polish Jews exterminated

What was Nazi rule like in Western Europe? (Netherlands - the good)
A
- Initially due to Dutch being seen as the same ethnic stock as Germans, they tried to win them over.
-Dutch education system remained untouched by the Nazis
-Civil servants (Mayors and councilmen) were allowed to keep working.
-June 29th 1940 dutch wore white carnations as a symbol of the Royal family who were living in exile and Nazi’s did nothing.

What was Nazi rule like in Western Europe (Netherlands- the bad)
A
- Mainly wanted resources such as raw materials, agricultural produce and industrial goods which led to extreme shortages
-1944 to 45 20000 Dutch died due starvation.
-Jews were being persecuted.
-May 1943 Dutch men between 18-35 were to become forced labourers and by 1945 men between 18-60 ended up working in Germany.

What are ghettos?
A
- small areas of towns and cities where Jewish people could be gathered together away.

A
- Upon entering possessions would be confiscated.
-People died from disease and starvation.

A
- Plan to kill Europe Jewish population

What was the role of the Einsatzgruppen?
A
- units of SS soldiers that murdered people in east Europe in huge numbers
-Victims were Jews, disabled and enemies of Germany
-Trucks converted into mobile gas chambers by having exhaust pipes piped into the back where victims were held.
