1 3rd of Mali’s population had been enslaved and the land was owned by the community so many slaves were needed to work on the farms. Some of the slaves were either criminals or people who had not paid their debt. Most of the slaves had certain rights like marriage, inheritance from their owners or having slaves of their own but the slaves in the distant east with the Arabs didn’t have these rights. it was after the 1600’s that slaves were taken to America and treated very harshly because slavery was “big business”.
