Slavery in the american south Flashcards
what was the main reason for slave trade
America needed hug labor forces to work on the plantations
what had a major impact on Europe’s raw materials and what did they do to fix this problem
the industrial revolution resulted in there needing to be more raw-materials and so they turned to other colonies around the world for increased production
why were the southern states of north america so good for farming and what did they grow there
America has a good climate and soil for farming and they grew tobacco, rice, sugar cane, indigo and cotton and in addition tobacco and snuff became very popular in Europe
how and why did the plantation owners use slaves
the natives that lived there didn’t need money because they lived off the land so they didn’t work as labourers and then farmers hired indentured servants(from Britain, Irland, Germany and Scotland) and contract workers on the plantations but there weren’t enough of them and they usually after becoming skilled. work on the plantations was labour intensives so the owners used slaves because they were more profitable and as the economy grew in England less workers came down
meaning: indigo, labour intensive, snuff and indentured servants
indigo - a blue coloured dye that comes from the Indigofera tinctoria plant
labour intensive - many workers required to do the job
snuff - finely ground tobacco which is sniffed though the nose
indentured servants - someone who work on a contract for a period of time
how were slaves captured, transported and sold from West Africa
Africans were capture and enslaved during the wars and raids. Some were condemned criminals or owed money, others were accused of witchcraft. they were chain and taken on long walks called “death marches” to the slave port on the coast and some didn’t even make it there alive. the Europeans dominated the slave market
What did Reverend Robert Walsh describe, when did he and what was it like
he described the conditions of a slave ship in 1829 and the ship was carrying 336 male and 226 female slaves. he had been travelling for 17 days and 55 had been thrown overboard. they sat below deck with no clothes, space and in their filth. he went to free them and 19 were dead, some had nails in there heads, some were foaming at the mouth and others couldn’t walk of just jumped over board. some children were dying of starvation and disease. his friend said it was on of the best ships he had ever seen
describe the way slaves were sold
they were auctioned off like cattle. their teeth and eyes were examined to check if they were healthy. Slave traders rub fat on skin to make them shine. younger, stronger and prettier slaves sold better. educated slave sold very well. It was very cruel when families were separated and sold to different buyers and little children would never see their mothers again.
how many slaves were taken to America
12 000 000 between 1619 and 1865, historians think 2 000 000 died on the long voyage from overcrowding and lack of food.
what happened to the raw materials slaves produced
They went to Britain “Mother Country”, cotton woven into fabrics and indigo used to dye them. Sugar cane was processed into small granules for tea + food. The brown syrup left was called molasses. Molasses used for alcohol.
Tobacco leaves made into cigarettes and snuff. Most manufactured goods sent to America but some went to Africa in exchange for more slaves. Slaves worked hard for little or no money. Had no money and no pride, couldn’t buy goods from Britain. The triangular trade consisted of the 1’st leg, slave trading and transporting from West Africa to America. 2’nd, raw materials produce at the plantations taken to Europe. 3rd, processed goods were exported. This was TRIANGULAR TRADE.
