The Nature Of Rebellions: Organisation Flashcards
What are some poorly organised rebellions?
Northern Earls, Simnel, Western, Oxfordshire and Essex
Why was the Northern Earls rebellion poorly organised?
The Earl of Northumberland left himself insufficient time to call on hid own tenants in Yorkshire and failed to appreciate how long it would take to march from Durham to Tutbury to realise Mary Stuart, who had been moved 30 miles south without the Earl’s knowledge
What happened when the Earl of Northumberland and Westmorland came to pay 1000 footmen at North Allerton during the Northern Earls rebellions?
They could only raise £20 between them, with 500 potential troops deserting them
Why was the Simnel rebellion badly organised?
The presence of 2000 German mercenaries and 40 Irish nobles with their ‘wild’ tenants deterred many English from joining the rebellions
What was the problems within the ranks of the Western rebellion?
There was animosity between the Cornishmen and Devonians but tension between peasantry, clergy and gentry
Why did the Oxfordshire rising have poor organisation?
Their secrecy was poor leading to a colleague altering his lord of their plans and their choice of Enslow hill was fairly predictable
Why was the Essex rebellion badly organised?
He advertised his dramatic acts with Shakespeare’s Richard II on the eve of the rebellion and couldn’t get Londoners, the mayor and sherif of London to join in and and no exit strategy
